About Black Dog Barn

Helping your horse feel comfortable, capable, and understood – with a whole-horse approach that supports both of you.

Hello, I’m Becky, and I run Black Dog Barn in Hunwick, County Durham. My work combines science, practical experience, and a genuine love for helping horses feel better in their bodies.

If you’re looking for someone who will look at the whole picture – the feet, the body, the diet, the behaviour, the environment, and your goals – you’re in the right place.

Many owners come to me because they want someone who can explain what’s going on in a clear, no-nonsense way without losing the warmth and empathy their situation needs.

I’m here to support both you and your horse, giving you clarity, confidence, and a plan you can follow.

A Whole Horse, Whole Owner Approach

Most people first find me for hoof care – often because their horse is uncomfortable, not improving, or because they’ve “tried everything” without getting answers. Hoof work is the starting point, but rarely the whole story.

I look beyond the hoof:

  • posture and movement
  • diet and nutrition
  • biomechanics
  • pain patterns
  • handling
  • comfort and behaviour
  • your horse’s job, age, and history

Horses don’t separate themselves into neat little sections, so I don’t either.

At every appointment, you’ll get straightforward explanations, practical guidance, and a realistic plan tailored to your horse. My aim is not a quick fix – it’s steady, meaningful improvement in your horse’s comfort and ability.

Why People Trust Me With Their Horses

I’ve spent my entire life surrounded by animals and decades studying how to help them feel better. My background includes:

  • A Domesticated Animal Science degree from Newcastle University
  • Advanced training in equine nutrition, hoof trimming, and biomechanics
  • Hands-on study with Pete Ramey, Ida Hammer, Rebecca Haddock, Sharon May Davies, Thirza Hendriks and more
  • Multiple whole-horse and lower-leg dissections
  • Ongoing bodywork, taping, and movement-based education
  • A commitment to constant learning so I can offer the very best support

Clients often tell me they appreciate my calm, steady approach. I stay professional, even when emotions run high, and if I don’t know something, I say so – and I’ll work to find the answer.

Above all, I treat every horse as if they were my own.

The Heart Behind The Name

Black Dog Barn is named in memory of my dog, Harvey. He passed away just before we found this property, and naming the business after him felt like the right way to honour a very special soul. He reminds me every day why our animals deserve the very best care we can give them – for their whole life, not just the easy parts.

What you can expect when we work together

You can rely on me to:

  • show up, communicate clearly, and keep you updated
  • be honest about what’s going on and what’s possible
  • look at the whole horse, not just the feet
  • suggest supportive changes based on sound knowledge, not guesswork
  • work alongside your vet or other professionals when needed
  • ultimately, do what’s right for your horse

Your horse’s comfort and welfare come first. Always.

For Horses Who Need More

I especially love working with owners who want:

  • help with discomfort or lameness
  • guidance after feeling stuck or unsure
  • a balanced, realistic plan they can follow
  • someone who explains things clearly without being patronising
  • an evidence-based, holistic approach
  • to understand their horse better

If you’ve been wishing for someone who genuinely gets horses – and gets you – I’d love to help.

A Final Word From Me

Black Dog Barn exists because my own horse once needed help I couldn’t find. I had to learn, dig, study, and try things for myself – and that journey shaped everything I offer today.

Now, I use that knowledge to help you and your horse find your way forward, too.
